It is with great sadness that the family of Wesley Alfred Conary shares the news of his sudden passing in Aiken South Carolina on February 12, 2022 at the age of 84. His kindness, sense of humor and dedication to his family will be sorely missed.
Wes was born August 4, 1937 to Bernice (nee King) Conary (of Amagansett, Long Island, New York) and Hollis Elwood Conary (of Deer Isle, Maine) in New London, Connecticut. He grew up in Quaker Hill, Connecticut with his dear sister Marilyn and graduated from New London High School in 1955.
He served in the Navy onboard the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge from 1955 to 1958 and during that time met his sweetheart Shirley Ann Ziemienski. Wesley and Shirley were united in matrimony on September 9, 1961 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in New London, Connecticut and welcomed their daughter Janet into the world two years later.
He was an early employee of IBM, retiring as a Field Engineer in 1992 and retained his interest in computers from then on.
They resided in East Lyme, Connecticut while their daughter came of age and then in Uncasville, Connecticut (wintering in Fort Lauderdale and Wellington, Florida) for many years. He provided much appreciated assistance to his daughter as she renovated and expanded horse properties in both Salem, Connecticut and Wellington. Electrical projects were his favorite! The family relocated to their dream property in Aiken, South Carolina in 2014.
Wes was a lifelong Red Sox fan. He was also an avid genealogist tracking his ancestors back sixty-five generations including in this country from 1628 and across the pond through Charlemagne and beyond. He and his wife enjoyed country dancing for many years and were complimented wherever they danced for their partnership. He was always a caretaker of songbirds, hummingbirds, chipmunks, cats, dogs, and horses.
He stayed vital and active through his last day doing what he loved best, managing the family’s Darlingwood Farm with his cherished daughter, enjoying his time outdoors, working together on the daily jigsaw puzzle, caring for his friends Casey, Raleigh, Ted, and Rocko, planning the next day’s project and being a true life partner to his beloved wife of sixty years.
Wes will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends including wife Shirley, daughter Janet, sister Marilyn Conary Hill of Uncasville, Connecticut and nephews James Keefe and Jeffery Keefe of Connecticut and Michael Keefe of Rhode Island.
Services will be private and held at a later date in Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to The Hummingbird Society or Aiken Equine Rescue.
