AIKEN, SC - Willie Winfred Ray, 89, was called home to the Lord at his residence on Monday, August 6, 2018. Winfred was born in Durham, NC on January 24, 1929, to the late Walter Walker Ray and Lois Margaret Perry Ray. He has called Aiken his home since 1952, accompanied by his late wife of 67 years, Alma "Amy" Ray.
Winfred is survived by his loving family of two sons, Kenneth Earl (Arlene) Ray and Randy Perry (Cynthia) Ray, both of Aiken, SC; four grandchildren, Jennifer Kerri (Greg) Ray - Baughman of Warrenville, SC, Walter Herbert (Kimberly) Ray of Williston, SC, Lauren Michelle (Christopher) Ray - McCarley of Aiken, SC and Jonathon Lee (Cassandra) Ray of Aiken, SC; three great grandchildren, Lukas Albert Ray, Caden Lee Ray both of Aiken, SC and Bailey Lynn Ray of Williston, SC. He also has a sister, Shirley (Tom) Heyward of Little River, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister Helen Ray Gaspard of Durham, NC.
He was a member of Aiken's First Baptist Church since 1954, where he was an usher and helped on the Finance Committee. He had many activities such as: golf as a member of Midland Valley Country Club, and former member of Cedar Creek Golf Club. In his younger years he loved square dancing with Carolina Squares and Round Dance Club. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame, Square and Round Dance Federation in Columbia, SC, in 1988. He was also a member of Mended Hearts Inc, helping organize charity golf tournaments and the DuPont Retiree Club. He also, really enjoyed helping his sons on their farms.
Winfred worked for E. I. DuPont as an operator in the D-Area and then transferred to M-Area serving out his years until retiring in 1985 with 32 years of service.
The family will receive friends Thursday morning, August 9th, at 10 o’clock at Aiken’s First Baptist Church, 120 Chesterfield Street, NE, Aiken, SC. The funeral service will follow at 11 o’clock with The Reverend Dr. Fred Andrea, III officiating. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens, 1523 Edgefield Hwy (Highway 19 North), Aiken, SC 29801. Pallbearers will be Walter Ray, Jonathon Ray, Christopher McCarley and Tommy Maloney.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to direct all memorials to Aiken's First Baptist Church, 120 Chesterfield Street NE, Aiken, SC 29801.
